Tucson is surrounded by mountain ranges, with the Catalina
range to the north, Rincon range to the east, Santa Rita range to the south
and the Tucson Mountain Range to the west.
The Catalinas, Rincons and Santa Rita mountain ranges have elevations of approximately
9000 feet. The city of Tucson’s
elevation is approximately 2350 feet is a factor in Tucson's beautiful
weather. Also, the Tucson elevation
provides early morning summertime temperatures to allow comfortable outdoor
activities such as walking, jogging, biking, golf etc.
On the western side of the Tucson mountains is where the world renowned Arizona Sonora Desert Museum is located. Recently a columnist wrote ”this innovative and specialized facility is a zoo, museum and botanical garden all in one”. Also in the valley is Old Tucson Studios where many well known western films have been made.
The Catalina range to the north encompasses Mt. Lemmon. The 45 minute drive to Mt. Lemmon is not to be missed and is a geologist dream with the rock formations along the way. Mt. Lemmon also boasts the southern most ski area in the United States. At the end of the drive up the mountain is the warm and friendly community of Summerhaven.
